Initially, we were drawn to his profile simply because of his licenses, but the actual experience was so much more! Ran is friendly, knowledgeable, a good driver, and always thoughtful about trip planning. Even before the trip started, he was in contact with us about helpful suggestions as to how we could modify the itinerary… Initially, we were drawn to his profile simply because of his licenses, but the actual experience was so much more! Ran is friendly, knowledgeable, a good driver, and always thoughtful about trip planning. Even before the trip started, he was in contact with us about helpful suggestions as to how we could modify the itinerary to better take advantage of our limited time (which we took him up on!). On the tour itself, things only got better – Ran went out of his way to show us interesting off-itinerary sites if we expressed interest, even when some were drive-bys off the shortest route. He did a fantastic job of recommending restaurants for us – choosing places that were reasonably priced, not too touristy, and delicious – I also noticed that he’d always check the bill to make sure we were getting charged a fair rate. He handled the sometimes-chaotic roads of Sri Lanka with care and we always felt safe in his van. The van was comfortable and AC worked well – we were surprised how much we appreciated being in a larger van vs a smaller vehicle, especially on longer days. His van was often an oasis on long days as we shuttled between outdoor sites in the heat and humidity, with Ran sharing insights about the local culture and funny stories as he handled aggressive tuk-tuk drivers. Overall our experience with Ran exceeded our expectations in every dimension – we can’t wait to return to Sri Lanka and explore more of the country with him!

Ran is clearly passionate about his job and about delivering the best experience to his customers. He consistently plans for the day ahead, is always communicative and in good spirits, dresses professionally and is open to all requests. It’s no surprise that he currently holds the title for the best tour guide in Sri Lanka. Aside from his historical knowledge, which he is always happy to share, Ran impressed us with his ability to provide information on religious and cultural norms in Sri Lanka, as well as insights into the country’s political and economic situation.

We went around a large part of the island and visited a lot of different places from historical monuments and a temples, through a safari with wild elephants and other animals, tried picking tea on tea plantations, watched the sunset over the inland nature, made several treks in the mountains with beautiful nature and breathtaking views and we swam and relax on splendid beaches by the ocean. But most of all we met a lot of nice people who make Sri Lanka such a beautiful country! One of them is Ranjith, our driver and guide, whom we chose here, based on recent reviews. Ran is a professional who has been in the field for a many years and has a lot of experiences. He takes great care to ensure that you as clients are satisfied and always is on your side. Ran is not only your driver, but also your guide. He will help you if you need to arrange anything or give advice on anything. Personally, Ran is a very nice guy who respects your needs, mood and privacy. We had our own itinerary, which we discused and confirmed together with Ran at the beginning. However, if you don’t have your own plan, you can rely on Ran without any worries. He will arrange and organize the entire stay, including accommodation, meals, trips, excursions, etc., according to your ideas! From the beginning, communication with Ran was very quick and to the point. His English is very good. The car itself, where you will spend a some of time, is spacious, comfortable, kept in perfect condition, with the necessary AC, perfectly clean every day and you will also appreciate the wifi. Ran is a good and attentive driver, with whom you will feel safe even on crazy Sri Lankan roads where no rules apply. During the vacation, we didn’t have to worry about time at all, Ran looked after everything and we were always on time and according to plan everywhere. If you’re choosing who to go on a trip to Sri Lanka with, look no further! Ran lives by his profession! And that is the main reason why we can recommend him to you with a clear conscience!

Ran’s extensive knowledge of Sri Lanka’s history, culture, and geography was evident from the start. He provided fascinating insights into each destination we visited, making the journey not only visually stunning but also intellectually stimulating. His passion for his country shone through in every anecdote, turning each drive into an informative and engaging session. He has a particularly strong understanding of Sri Lanka’s flora and fauna, and it was fascinating joining him on a short safari tour through Udawalawe National Park where he was able to point out some wonderful animals.
Ran was always prompt and ready to kick-start our daily adventures, ensuring we maximized our time exploring the diverse attractions of Sri Lanka, though giving us options and flexibility in terms of when we wanted to start each day. On days when we simply wanted to chill out and relax by the beach (which was a big part of the second half of our trip) Ran left us to our own devices but was always on hand if we needed his help with anything at all. Whether navigating bustling city streets or winding through scenic mountain roads, his skillful and safe driving (in stark contrast to some of the truly insane bus drivers in here) and calm demeanor instilled confidence and allowed us to relax and enjoy the mesmerizing views.
One of the standout qualities of Ran was his genuine concern for our comfort and satisfaction. He tailored the itinerary to our preferences, introducing us to hidden gems off the beaten path and adjusting plans based on our interests. His recommendations for local restaurants, where we indulged in delectable Sri Lankan cuisine, added a delicious layer to our cultural immersion. In particular, he went the extra mile in ensuring we were able to take the Nuwara Eliya to Ella train journey. He took us to the Nano Oya train station early in the day, managed to procure some third class tickets for us (which we had seen were sold out for pre-purchase) and even rushed on to the train ahead of us to secure two seats for myself and my girlfriend so that we could have a comfortable journey before disembarking and driving on to Ella. This was massively appreciated, and a true highlight of the trip.
In summary, our two-week adventure in Sri Lanka was an unforgettable experience by the exceptional services of Ran. His professionalism, knowledge, and genuine warmth set him apart as a top-tier driver and tour guide. Ran looked after us three active women for 15 days (June 2023) as our driver, guide and adviser on everything from suitable roadside foods, to the best times to visit sites, to appropriate tipping.
Our trip took in Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Gal Oya, Kandy, Sigiriya, Nilaveli, Anuradhapura, Negombo so we covered a lot of the country.
Ran communicated via email over several weeks as we clarified the itinerary, rates, accommodation and expectations. His suggestions for accommodation at around $US30 a night each were all perfect. When one was cancelled at the last minute (due to the hotel’s switchboard blowing up), the owner and Ran swiftly organised alternative accommodation at a comparable property nearby, in the jungle, that proved to be a foodie highlight of our trip. The care, warmth and diligence by all concerned won’t be forgotten.
Over decades as a guide, Ran has built a network and knowledge base that gives his clients wonderful personal experiences. When he says the accommodation suggestion is with “a friend”, you can accept that it is legit and has his guarantee of being suitable, as he has built a special relationship with countless hosts who aim to please their guests.
When on the road in rural areas, Ran was a marvellous go-between with non-English-speaking hosts, at eateries and especially in finding us drinkable coffee and acceptable washrooms (among our personal necessities).
Ran is passionate about his job as a guide and invests himself into every client, finding out their individual preferences to make the experience appropriate and memorable.
It is our absolute pleasure to recommend Ran’s services, for his precise planning and good communication, his concern for our welfare and all of our preferences, his intimate knowledge of Sri Lanka, his impeccable appearance and daily cleaning of the van, his pride and pleasure in being a guide, his endlessly skilful, patient and careful driving, and the cheeky sense of humour that eventually surfaced.

Ran is an exceptional guide in many ways. His knowledge of his country’s history and culture is extensive and Ran is shares this with enthusiasm. If you care to know more about the Sri Lankan people and their current situation he also generously answered all sorts of questions we had. Ran taught us some useful Sri Lankan words and greetings and we loved having a few basics to
acknowledge local people in their language.
The advantage of having the same driver for our entire trip was that it gave us confidence and the ability to really relax and thoroughly enjoy our time in Sri Lanka. Ran was able to help us with the little things and gave us tips along the way to make everything more enjoyable. He took us to some fabulous roadside restaurants which had incredible food, which we probably wouldn’t have known about without his help. We did a fairly extensive trip and Ran was very aware that it was our holiday and was keen to tailor make it so it met our wishes. His motto is “Your tour, your choice” and he certainly followed through with this. My cricket mad husband even got to watch a session of international cricket in Galle, which was spontaneous and a lot of fun.
Ran’s van is very comfortable with great air-conditioning (a must) and he makes sure his vehicle has good, safe tyres. He offers free WIFI while in the van. He’s also a very safe driver, which is a must, as the driving in Sri Lanka is a little crazy.
We organized most of our accommodation before we arrived (being a little unsure of what would be best) but next time we would ask Ran to help with that as its also a service he can provide. Ran is able to help you book directly with hotels and this can save you some money and also means the hotels don’t have to pay a third party and
lose some of their profits.

Ranjith’s vehicle is very clean and comfortable. He is a very safe driver. He has an excellent knowledge of road conditions and routes, knows where to get the best view be it a temple or nature.
He is not just a driver/chauffeur but a national guide too. Therefore he accompanied us to all sites and provided necessary information.
During our 14 day tour, he did not take us to any shops or tried to sell anything to us. We felt that we are is safe hands.
We will highly recommend him to be your planner/ organizer, chauffeur and guide.

The last full day we did Yala safari at our request which isn’t as good as it’s very busy. He highlighted many other points of interest along the way.
Ran then drove us to our next hotel to end the tour. We would highly recommend Ran he’s a true gentleman, very considerate of his guests and looks after you very well. We did the tea plantation and waterfalls along with the scenic train which Ran organised for us. Our seats were very good.
We stayed again the mountains and then on to the elephant safari via the waterfalls which were great.

Next day we went to Yala at our request which isn’t so good due to the numbers in the national park. Stayed in Yala then Ran took us to our hotel in Marissa.

The van was always spotlessly clean each morning and Ran was a very safe and careful driver, something that is not always evident in Sri Lanka, wifi in the van was an added bonus.
Ran was always available to liaise with the locals, whether assisting with meals, tickets or finding the cleanest washrooms, which was very much appreciated.
We highly recommend Ran if you are considering a trip to Sri Lanka.

From the beginning Ran was very kind and helping. I sent him our travel details and Ran arranged a Safari at Udawalawe NP for us, and also provided us a number of Hotel recommendations.
In Sri Lanka Ran got us safely through the chaotic traffic and his van was very comfortable throughout our 8 day trip.
It surprised us that Ran also took an active part in our trip planning, took over the communication with the Hotels, also arranged lunch and dinner and showed us the best spots at each destination. We appreciate his kind assistance alot and it made our vacation much more convenient.
When we tried to get a train ticket near Ella, Ran went above and beyond to get us seats – even though that day everything was completely booked and the trains were full. At the end we got a good spot on one of the trains and all thanks to him.
The Udawalawe safari that Ran organized for us was an amazing experience and we we’re lucky to see much of the wild life. The Jeep was comfortable and we got close to elefants, crocodiles, deers, birds and more.
Ran is very experienced and knowledgable about the country’s history, culture and wild life, so we learned alot in between destinations. During the Safari he helped us spot the animals and explained alot.
He never lead us into tourist traps and instead warned us about scams, so we never felt pressured to do or buy anything.
Ran was also very flexible and took us everywhere we wanted to go.
At the end of our trip he kindly asked us for direct feedback both positive and negative, which we appreciate.
To summarize: we booked a “Driver” but we got much more – Ran was also our guide and travel assistant. His service was exceptional and there’s nothing to complain about.

We traveled around Sri Lanka with Ran in his impeccable 4×4. The vehicle, with a/c, is very spacious and comfortable, he keeps it very clean and drives very prudently. He knows his country very well. Before arriving in Sri Lanka we had already communicated with Ran by email to tell him what our route plan… We traveled around Sri Lanka with Ran in his impeccable 4×4. The vehicle, with a/c, is very spacious and comfortable, he keeps it very clean and drives very prudently. He knows his country very well. Before arriving in Sri Lanka we had already communicated with Ran by email to tell him what our route plan was and the accommodations we had reserved. But he can organize the entire trip very well, hotel reservations included within the budget that is set for him and cheaper than any agency. He told us many interesting stories and anecdotes and managed to take us to “special” places, difficult to find in tourist guides.
There are many things that a tourist can’t get (such as tickets to the scenic train from Kandy to Ella, impossible to obtain without Ran’s invaluable help). He is also a guide who does not take you to stores for you to buy and thus earn a commission. He is a very ethical person in this regard. I recommend any traveler wishing to visit the beautiful island of Sri Lanka to contact Ran: ranjithalwis@ymail.com. He does not speak Spanish, we communicate with him in English.

Ran knowledgeable chauffeur Guide with lots of stories all about Srilanka, an international, safe driver, and a very good hummer. He spoke perfect English and always has a nice clean minivan that was comfortable 4 people with bags.
And not to forget- he offers Wi-Fi during our time in his car! Perfect to be able to do some work while we went for many hours in the car.

Ran advised on timings and offered to book reasonable accommodation, too. The offered was also the best one! He is a good and safe driver, stops when you want and give you as much time as you need. He Never offered or insisted on any touristic shops or restaurants. He advises on tips and ensured we were not charged more than locals. Ran is very cultural, gives you good orientation and guided us in the visited places. You do not need to worry about booking tickets, hiring additional local guides. The car was very comfortable with well enough place for four of us and our luggage. Ran also well managed for the fuel, so we where not impacted at All by the economic crisis.

It has been a truly wonderful experience. We were a little anxious about the political situation in the country but in practice this didnt significantly affect us.
Ran is extremely experienced and knowledgeable. He has many contacts around the country which helped our trip go smoothly.
He is a careful driver and takes great care to keep his SUV clean. There is also Wi-Fi in his vehicle which we found very useful.
I have been on trips where guides are constantly taking you to shops, predumably because it is in their interests. Ran did not do that once which we greatly appreciated. We knew he would take us somewhere if we asked but had confidence he would make sure we werent taken advantage of.
The hotels Ran took us too were generally good particularly if you are on a budget. I did book some of the hotels before we came to Sri Lanka which was fine by Ran. He was very accomodating throughout. We are completing our trip with a few days in a relatively expensive hotel but despite flashing out at the end our holiday has been very good value. I would strongly recommend Ran to you and this type of trip. Ive done lots of organised tours with large companies in the past and this has compared very well with them all. Do come to Sri Lanka. Our safari driver which we organised ourselves dissapeared thus Ran organised us a new very professional driver within an hour the night before the safari morning. The safari driver took us so early in the morning that we were the second car to the gate and were able to see 3 leopards (only few cars saw them). Ran did our holiday special, we felt safe and taken care of. Thank you so much! Totally recommend!

9) Prompt arrivals and recommendations for travel times/routes to take and avoid
10) Calling ahead to hotels to notify we were on the way and to ensure everything was ready
Having Ran with you is like having an entire team there helping you navigate a foreign land while maximizing your value and time spent doing activities that match your interests. He is very protective of you and your time.
Ran takes his role as your travel advisor very seriously. His van was always clean (he was constantly sweeping it and picking up after us) and he realizes the importance of wearing a mask and sanitizing his hands frequently (even more often than we did). In a country that doesn’t watch the clock, Ran was always very early to pick us up. On our departure we misread the time and needed to be picked up at 3AM instead of 5AM. Not a problem, we texted Ran that night and he was there early that morning. He verified all timelines and provided alternatives when necessary.
One example of Ran’s usefulness was when we needed a COVID test for our next travel date and found out that only certain areas of the country offered them. Ran called up the tour authority and got in contact with a local hospital, arranged clinical staff to transit to our hotel, and coordinated all of this with hotel management. He followed up with the clinic repeatedly to ensure our samples had arrived and that we would get the results timely. He single-handedly turned a potential headache into a seamless experience and we were able to continue our vacation without worrying.
There were other experiences like this as well. The bottom line is that if you don’t have Ran guiding you, then I guarantee you are going to overpay, put yourself at risk, and not have nearly the experience that you could have had. He is literally worth his weight in Sri Lankan gold!
Having Ran there with us on the trip made me realize that this type of service is invaluable and I have been missing out on many of my other trips. I plan to now start using a local chauffeur (guide) for my upcoming vacations and will definitely use Ran again when I am back in Sri Lanka.

I am very glad that we chose Ran as our driver. He speaks good English (but I don’t))), he knows all the roads very well, he has a comfortable car, he is always punctual, polite, he told us interesting stories along the way.
Since my English leaves much to be desired, Ran tried to speak slowly and with different synonyms so that I could understand everything. Thank you very much for this! He drives carefully, he always asks if he needs something along the way – to make a stop, eat, or something else.

You should have experience to know, choose these hotels; a car to get there; routes, to get there in a proper way. The place you live has a sense, because you can see little nuances that can influence on your mood (fireflies in a pine forest, sunrise in the mountains, rest in a rice field, authentic design places to feel at home, etc)
So you can rely on the taste )

We reviewed a… We have finished our vacation trip with Ranjith just a few days ago. Our little company of 4 persons from Ukraine spent 6 days travelling across the island. The first part of our vacation we spent on the Mirissa beach, then we needed someone with a car to show us an island. We reviewed a lot of drivers on various internet resources and stoped our choice on Ran Holidays for 2 main reasons:
1. Really good reviews of other people;
2. When I wrote a letter to Ran he answered me immediately, what I can not say about other drivers.
We made a plan on how to spend these days and sent it to Ran, so he could recommend us a better way to visit all the places we wanted what he actually did. When we met Ran first time met, he made a positive first impression. He arrived on time and was waiting for us more than 1,5 hours. Ran speaks English fluently and tried to repeat us if we couldn’t understand. That was a huge advantage because there are no so many people on Sri-Lanka who speak English well.
I should admit also, Ran drives his car very carefully and safely. That also was a surprise, as we travelled small distances with other drivers and it was like a nightmare.
On our journey, we didn’t solve any issues as Ranjith dealt with all of them. He booked hotels (the best local ones with a scenic view) in each new city for us, he helped us to buy tickets, change money, pick mature fruits, made stops if we needed to go to the supermarket or anything else. If we were exhausted we could sleep in car as much as we wanted.
The thing that make him a profeccional in this sphere – he loves his job, he has fantastic knowledge about Sri-Lanka and has an aswer to any qouestion from history to little birds, from food to traditions.
Definitely I will recommend Ran to my friends as we got much more than expected. And at the end of our trip, it was difficult to say good-bye, as he became our good friend.
Don’t hesitate, choose Ranjith and you will get the maximum of your trip!

Ran is a very well educated and knowledgable man and a very safe driver, which you definitely need on the roads in Sri Lanka. His knowledge of the history, flora and fauna enhanced our trip and it was nice to have the local knowledge of the best times and days to do certain activities.
Our 17 day trip with Ran went very smoothly as he was always on time, friendly, informative and showed great concern for our welfare. When our son was sick in Kandy he said to call him anytime if we wanted to take him to the hospital. It didn’t end up being necessary but it was great to know we had someone to call on if we needed.
Ran totally understands that it is your holiday so will give you the help but also the space you need to enjoy your trip.

Ran picked us up in Colombo for a 5 day trip in September 2019, then we proceeded to Galle for a couple of days. Along the way we visited a sea turtle rescue operation and also did a mangrove boat expedition, both were worth the time spent. After Galle we headed north to Udawalawe for a safari which he lined up. Great experience, we saw at least 30 elephants, many right next to the truck as well as peacocks, water buffalo, a wild hog, a civic cat and numerous other birds both large and small. Next we had a very long day going to Ella, NeuwaraElla, and Kandy. Even though this was a very long day we had great conversations about both of our countries, plants, politics, religion, etc. and we felt very safe despite the crazy driving in Sri Lanka. The final day he dropped us at the airport in Colombo on time, safe and sound.
Ran started this trip as a driver and guide and ended it as a friend. I would highly recommend him not only for his ability to communicate, his knowledge and obvious love of his country but also his van is comfortable and has plenty of room.

Ran is very friendly, easy going and flexible and has excellent English. He is tremendously knowledgeable about the history, culture and also the natural history of Sri Lanka.
We had planned some of our route and accommodation and Ran helped us plan the remainder en-route, suggesting some excellent places to stay. We ate at a many non-tourist places and he always provided good advice on what to pay and how to tip.
Ran is knowledgeable and experienced and was able to take us to places of particular interest (in architecture, landscape and food) and Ran organised a brilliant evening visit to the Kataragama Perahera.
We traveled from Negombo mbo to Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Tissa and back up the coast In Ran’s very comfortable and clean Toyota van and always felt very safe and the pace was unhurried.
Some days we spent without travelling and Ran was always extremely punctual picking us up and responding to calls and texts.
We would thoroughly recommend Ran if you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka. He may not be the cheapest driver, but the cheapest is never the best and we got more than our money’s worth with Ran.

This time we decided to go with Ranjith, even though he was not the cheapest proposal, due to his communication and feedback. We could not have been happier, and we think it may have saved us money even. Every night he helped us find cheap accommodation that fit our budget and bargain extensively at times. Not only accommodation but anywhere we went: local restaurants, shops, etc. Ranjith was a very good, slow and safe driver, very careful and with his nice car, always clean, good AC. He was always on time in the morning, and very flexible with our schedule. We work online until late night and usually start our days late. He speaks very good english, and had many interesting facts to share about Sri Lanka. During our stay, unfortunately Sri Lanka suffered terrorist bombing attacks. Ranjith was always on top of things, careful and with updated information, very helpful and responsible. We were very calm about everything and it did not affect our trip. We recommend him to anyone wanting to visit.

For example when we wanted to climb Lion Rock he suggested the perfect time to reduce the effects of the extreme heat.
Do not underestimate the importance of a safe driver in Sri Lanka. We never felt in danger once with Ran.
He was not only punctual every day but was also able to estimate extremely accurately the time of arrival at each destination.
Ran was extremely flexible and and did not pressure us in any way. His motto “your tour your choice” is so true!

He is a gentle and very honourable person with a great sense of humour. This was my third trip to Sri Lanka in the past 25 years so I had a good idea of what I wanted to do and show my family. Ran helped me arrange a memorable trip and my 2 children (aged 10 and 12 years) got on with him incredibly well, he made them feel safe and he really listened to what they wanted to do. He arranged a fantastic safari and so much more, and made good suggestions during our trip of where to go, stopping off at some truly beautiful places.
Ran is very knowledgeable and made visiting the country that more enjoyable. He is full of interesting facts and the kids really did learn a lot from him.
He is a very considerate and safe driver and his van is comfortable and spacious.

This time Ran arranged a full 9 day tour for us, including B&B in good 3 star hotels, for a very reasonable price. He’s a very friendly, knowledgeable and dependable guide and, on both tours, has really helped us make the most of our time in Sri Lanka. When one of our party suffered a a fracture he was absolutely brilliant at getting us the medical help we needed, and replanned our accommodation and activities accordingly. We would absolutely recommend him and hope to travel with him again.

We were advised to hire Ranjith prior to our visit to Sri Lanka and was super happy with our trip. Ranjith is an extremely knowledgeable and excellent guide and run quietly and safely on the roads. Before we arrived to Sri lanka, we had made our own bookings at the different hotels. Unfortunately we got in contact with Ran after the hotels where booked, when we now know that he can arrange fantastic hotels all around Sri Lanka.
We started at the airport and went to Pinnawala, Kandy, Ella and stoped in Unawatuna. During this 6 days, we had a terrific guide and driver in Ran. The car was comfortable and very clean, perfect for us as a small family with a lots of luggage. Ran as guide is very experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Always in time, well prepared and in good mood, was something that we appreciated.
When you travel with children, you also know that somethimes do you need to be flexible (as family and driver). Ran was very good to pay attention to our daughter’s well-being and to experience things she appreciated.
Finally, we can also mention that Ran is a very good driver with a comfortable driving style. We would gladly recommend Ran as a guide and driver! Thanks Ran for some fantastic days together!!!

Ran is a perfect choice for budget Sri Lankan experience. We were very happy with his selection of small hotels, which allowed us to experience local culture whilst feeling very comfortable. Also it was a hassle free holiday as Ran took care of everything and always had an advice for the next day tour, which was great. He has a very good knowledge of the island and it’s wildlife of course and can answer any question you may have (huge bonus). Most importantly he is a very honest person you can trust.

My partner and I spent a great week with Ran at the beginning of December 2017. We have set some fixed points, Ran has planned the route and proposed us hotels. The whole thing was already months before our trip, the answers were always very fast. Later we also saw why. Ran is an incredibly… My partner and I spent a great week with Ran at the beginning of December 2017. We have set some fixed points, Ran has planned the route and proposed us hotels. The whole thing was already months before our trip, the answers were always very fast. Later we also saw why. Ran is an incredibly hard-working guy and while we recovered from sightseeing in the evenings, he opened the notebook and answered his mails – every day! One week is of course too short to see everything, so we went longer distances – Ran is a very comfortable and safe driver, which one can not expect from God from all locals. The proposed hotels were all very clean and tidy. In between, Ran has always shown us something worth seeing along the way and told us a lot about Buddhism and Sri Lanka. There were no unwanted stops at souvenir shops, etc. On our questions about prices, etc. Ran has always given us a competent and honest answer and thus several times protected us from increased prices.
Shortly before our planned arrival we had to reschedule something, also there Ran was very flexible, canceled a room without cancellation costs and picked us up instead of the hotel reliably at the airport.
Overall, a clear recommendation for a trip with Ran!
Regardless of this, generally speaking to Sri Lanka:
It is a bit strange when you pay as tourist x times more for admissions than the locals. Maybe you can somehow understand that money is needed to preserve the cultural sites, etc. But that you have to pay 3 times the price for food (eg Rice And Curry), that goes too far. So better ask first.

Ran ist ein unglaublich fleißiger Kerl und während wir uns abends von dem sightseeing erholt haben, hat er das Notebook aufgeklappt und seine Mails beantwortet – jeden Tag! Eine Woche ist natürlich zu kurz um alles zu sehen, daher sind wir auch längere Strecken gefahren – Ran ist ein sehr gemütlicher und sicherer Fahrer, was man bei Gott nicht von allen einheimischen erwarten kann. Die vorgeschlagenen Hotels waren alle sehr sauber und ordentlich. Zwischendurch hat Ran uns immer etwas sehenswertes an der Strecke gezeigt und uns viel zum Buddhismus und Sri Lanka erzählt. Es gab keine ungewollten Stopps an Souvenirläden etc. Auf unsere Fragen zu Preisen etc. hat Ran uns immer eine kompetente und ehrliche Antwort gegeben und uns so mehrmals vor erhöhten Preisen geschützt.
Kurz vor unserer geplanten Anreise mussten wir etwas umplanen, auch da war Ran sehr flexibel, hat ohne stornokosten ein Zimmer gecancelt und uns statt vom Hotel verlässlich am Flughafen abgeholt.
Insgesamt eine klare Empfehlung für Eine Reise mit Ran!
Davon unabhängig noch generell zu Sri Lanka:
Es ist schon etwas ungewohnt, wenn man als Tourist x-mal mehr für Eintritte bezahlt als die Einheimischen. Das kann man vielleicht noch irgendwie verstehen, dass geld benötigt wird um die Kulturstätten zu erhalten etc. Dass man aber teilweise beim Essen den 3-fachen Preis bezahlen muss (z.B. Rice And Curry), das geht zu weit. Also besser vorher fragen .

We had a fantastic experience with Ran during our visit.
First of all, Ran is a reputed and certified/official tourist guide with 25 years of experience in the job. After working for different tourist companies, now he is working on his own for the last years. Once you contact him, he will ask what places of Sri Lanka are you interested in visiting and he will customize the tour according to your needs and available days.
Ran is always on time and he will take care of you during the whole tour and drive you around the country, which by the way, is not an easy task. Traffic in Sri Lanka is quite chaotic but he is an experienced driver and you’ll always feel safe during the trips. He owns a nice, clean and comfortable Toyota van, equipped with a good A/C and enough space for up to 5 people. He is always taking care of his van and will keep it clean during the tour.
He booked the hotels for us in advance at the places we wanted to visit and even bought train tickets before we arrived to Sri Lanka, but he didn’t charge anything in advance. For me, the most important thing is that he is a serious, responsible and honest person.
At the tourist places, he will guide you throughout the place and give his explanations but he will never take you to tourists souvenirs shops unless you request so.
Ran is also a funny person with a great sense of humor. He went through a lot of experiences with people from different nationalities during his years as a tourist guide and is always happy to keep a good and interesting conversation during the trips. He has a really good knowledge of the english language.
During our trip we found other tourists who hired a driver and then another person as a guide and were struggling to get hotels on their own at the touristic places in an attempt to save some money. Other people were hiring tuctuc drivers day by day and getting cheated by them, or traveling around in crappy buses with no A/C, etc. My advice is: Why would you do that when you can have a driver who is a guide at the same time and who is somebody you can trust and will take care of everything for you? At the end of the day, in my opinion, you will save money and headaches hiring somebody like Ran and trust in his experience.
I really recommend Ran for your tour in Sri Lanka. As I said, for me the most important thing is that he is an experienced guide and a honest person you can trust. And as he said, we came as clients and went like friends!

Es una persona muy ética, con 1000 anécdotas y curiosidades que contar en los largos viajes por carretera y un gran sentido del humor.
Sin duda Ran, es una opción segura para visitar el país. Mucho más que un guía!!!!!

Volvimos de Sri Lanka hace dos semanas y nos quedamos encantados con la ruta y los servicios de nuestro guía y conductor Ranjith Alwis. Sólo tenemos buenas palabras para él. Realizamos un itinerario de 1 semana por el país, en su cómoda van con aire acondicionado, visitando los siguientes lugares: Aeropuerto de Colombo – Polonnaruwa… Volvimos de Sri Lanka hace dos semanas y nos quedamos encantados con la ruta y los servicios de nuestro guía y conductor Ranjith Alwis. Sólo tenemos buenas palabras para él. Realizamos un itinerario de 1 semana por el país, en su cómoda van con aire acondicionado, visitando los siguientes lugares: Aeropuerto de Colombo – Polonnaruwa – Sigiriya – Dambulla – Kandy – Nuwara Eliya – Ella – Yala – Mirissa – Galle – Negombo – Aeropuerto de Colombo.
Ran, como le llamamos, nos ayudó a organizar la ruta y los hoteles mediante toda la correspondencia que mantuvimos con él en las semanas previas al viaje. Contestó rápidamente todos nuestros pesados mails, con mil dudas, preguntas y preocupaciones! También se encargó de reservar todos los hoteles, pequeños y con mucho encanto, en los que nos alojamos a lo largo del itinerario por Sri Lanka.
El grupo lo componíamos 2 parejas jóvenes y a pesar de la diferencia de edad con Ran, la conexión y el buen rollo que tuvimos con él fue espectacular. Nos reímos mucho durante todo el recorrido con él y con la música de Ran FM, que hicieron amenos y llevaderos los kilómetros por carretera.
Ranjith Alwis es un excelente conductor y guía oficial de Sri Lanka que conoce y ama profundamente su país, su historia y su cultura. Con él pudimos descubrir el país de una forma muy cómoda, durmiendo y comiendo en hoteles y restaurantes familiares que nos acercaron más a las costumbres y a la gente maravillosa de Sri Lanka.
Ran se adaptó en todo momento a lo que le pedimos, modificando a veces el itinerario pactado, e intentando satisfacernos al máximo para que nuestra experiencia en este país tan maravilloso fuera inmejorable. Y lo cierto es que nunca lo olvidaremos! Ran, te mandamos un abrazo desde aquí!

As a special review, we can highly recommend the unbhängigen driver and guide Ranjith Alwis (Ran) Ran Holidays (ranjithalwis@ymail.com, www.facebook.com/ransrilanka)! Ran has organized the route, the accommodation and tours for us and always endeavored that we all get only the best rooms, the best views and the best service. It has a comfortable air-conditioned van, is a careful driver, always professional, punctual, considerate, reliable and a very pleasant travel companion, always personable and warm-hearted, sometimes even very funny. He is an educated guide and connoisseur of his country, either geographically or in terms of culture, religion, economy and nature, and has led us competently in all attractions, from temples to natural parks. His prices are suitable for budget conscious as well as for discerning travelers since it concerning accommodation, destinations and excursions is very open to be desired. For us, he had some secret tips ready with a varied hotel mix, mostly in very special “locations” and with special views. Ran is friendly, knowledgeable, a good driver, and always thoughtful about trip planning. Initially, we were drawn to his profile simply because of his licenses, but the actual experience was so much more! Ran is friendly, knowledgeable, a good driver, and always thoughtful about trip planning. Even before the trip started, he was in contact with us about helpful suggestions as to how we could modify the itinerary to better take advantage of our limited time (which we took him up on!). On the tour itself, things only got better – Ran went out of his way to show us interesting off-itinerary sites if we expressed interest, even when some were drive-bys off the shortest route. He did a fantastic job of recommending restaurants for us – choosing places that were reasonably priced, not too touristy, and delicious – I also noticed that he’d always check the bill to make sure we were getting charged a fair rate. He handled the sometimes-chaotic roads of Sri Lanka with care and we always felt safe in his van. The van was comfortable and AC worked well – we were surprised how much we appreciated being in a larger van vs a smaller vehicle, especially on longer days. His van was often an oasis on long days as we shuttled between outdoor sites in the heat and humidity, with Ran sharing insights about the local culture and funny stories as he handled aggressive tuk-tuk drivers. Overall our experience with Ran exceeded our expectations in every dimension – we can’t wait to return to Sri Lanka and explore more of the country with him!

In August 2024, our family spent an amazing 3-week vacation in Sri Lanka. We went around a large part of the island and visited a lot of different places from historical monuments and a temples, through a safari with wild elephants and other animals, tried picking tea on tea plantations, watched the sunset over the inland nature, made several treks in the mountains with beautiful nature and breathtaking views and we swam and relax on splendid beaches by the ocean. But most of all we met a lot of nice people who make Sri Lanka such a beautiful country! One of them is Ranjith, our driver and guide, whom we chose here, based on recent reviews. Ran is a professional who has been in the field for a many years and has a lot of experiences. He takes great care to ensure that you as clients are satisfied and always is on your side. Ran is not only your driver, but also your guide. He will help you if you need to arrange anything or give advice on anything. Personally, Ran is a very nice guy who respects your needs, mood and privacy. We had our own itinerary, which we discused and confirmed together with Ran at the beginning. However, if you don’t have your own plan, you can rely on Ran without any worries. He will arrange and organize the entire stay, including accommodation, meals, trips, excursions, etc., according to your ideas! From the beginning, communication with Ran was very quick and to the point. His English is very good. The car itself, where you will spend a some of time, is spacious, comfortable, kept in perfect condition, with the necessary AC, perfectly clean every day and you will also appreciate the wifi. Ran is a good and attentive driver, with whom you will feel safe even on crazy Sri Lankan roads where no rules apply. During the vacation, we didn’t have to worry about time at all, Ran looked after everything and we were always on time and according to plan everywhere. If you’re choosing who to go on a trip to Sri Lanka with, look no further! Ran lives by his profession! And that is the main reason why we can recommend him to you with a clear conscience!

He would do as much or as little as we wanted each day, he would translate for us as well. He is not just a driver but a guide would specialise is wildlife! He was not the cheapest quote I had but I’m so pleased I went with him as everything was included, tolls, parking etc and he did not take us to any tourist trap shops (unless we asked) . Whether navigating bustling city streets or winding through scenic mountain roads, his skillful and safe driving (in stark contrast to some of the truly insane bus drivers in here) and calm demeanor instilled confidence and allowed us to relax and enjoy the mesmerizing views.

He took us to the Nano Oya train station early in the day, managed to procure some third class tickets for us (which we had seen were sold out for pre-purchase) and even rushed on to the train ahead of us to secure two seats for myself and my girlfriend so that we could have a comfortable journey before disembarking and driving on to Ella. This was massively appreciated, and a true highlight of the trip.

Ran took care of us for the whole trip starting and finishing at the airport. Before we communicated and agreed everything via email. Ran is not just a driver. He was our guide, and he shared a lot information about Sri Lanka, culture and nature with us. He was always very punctual and safely driving us over the country. He made sure that hotels, restaurants suites us. Ran is passionate about his job. He is very friendly. He tries to get to know his customers and considers individual preferences and expectations. He makes suggestions and advices where to go, where to eat, what to see. But never put a pressure and adapts to his customers individual way of seeing Sri Lanka. Choosing Ran (Ranjith Alwis, of Ran Holidays – Sri Lankan Experience) as our guide was one of the best things about our trip to Sri Lanka. Ran looked after us three active women for 15 days (June 2023) as our driver, guide and adviser on everything from suitable roadside foods, to the best times to visit sites, to appropriate tipping.
Our trip took in Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Gal Oya, Kandy, Sigiriya, Nilaveli, Anuradhapura, Negombo so we covered a lot of the country.
Ran communicated via email over several weeks as we clarified the itinerary, rates, accommodation and expectations. His suggestions for accommodation at around $US30 a night each were all perfect. When one was cancelled at the last minute (due to the hotel’s switchboard blowing up), the owner and Ran swiftly organised alternative accommodation at a comparable property nearby, in the jungle, that proved to be a foodie highlight of our trip. The care, warmth and diligence by all concerned won’t be forgotten.
Over decades as a guide, Ran has built a network and knowledge base that gives his clients wonderful personal experiences. When he says the accommodation suggestion is with “a friend”, you can accept that it is legit and has his guarantee of being suitable, as he has built a special relationship with countless hosts who aim to please their guests.
When on the road in rural areas, Ran was a marvellous go-between with non-English-speaking hosts, at eateries and especially in finding us drinkable coffee and acceptable washrooms (among our personal necessities).
Ran is passionate about his job as a guide and invests himself into every client, finding out their individual preferences to make the experience appropriate and memorable.

We chose Ran to be our tour guide during our 14 day Sri Lankan holiday on the recommendation from friends who have done many tours with Ran.
Ran is an exceptional guide in many ways. His knowledge of his country’s history and culture is extensive and Ran is shares this with enthusiasm. If you care to know more about the Sri Lankan people and their current situation he also generously answered all sorts of questions we had. Ran taught us some useful Sri Lankan words and greetings and we loved having a few basics to
acknowledge local people in their language.
The advantage of having the same driver for our entire trip was that it gave us confidence and the ability to really relax and thoroughly enjoy our time in Sri Lanka. Ran was able to help us with the little things and gave us tips along the way to make everything more enjoyable. He took us to some fabulous roadside restaurants which had incredible food, which we probably wouldn’t have known about without his help. We did a fairly extensive trip and Ran was very aware that it was our holiday and was keen to tailor make it so it met our wishes. His motto is “Your tour, your choice” and he certainly followed through with this. My cricket mad husband even got to watch a session of international cricket in Galle, which was spontaneous and a lot of fun.
Ran’s van is very comfortable with great air-conditioning (a must) and he makes sure his vehicle has good, safe tyres. He offers free WIFI while in the van. He’s also a very safe driver, which is a must, as the driving in Sri Lanka is a little crazy.

Ran is able to help you book directly with hotels and this can save you some money and also means the hotels don’t have to pay a third party and

Tuvimos una conducción tranquila y segura, es buen conductor. El Sr. Ran también se encargó de proporcionarnos hoteles pintorescos con buen precio y personal amable en todo momento.
Tengo que decir que el Sr. Ran es muy buena persona, hizo también buen trabajo como guía turístico siendo flexible en los cambios que le proponíamos.

Ranjith is extremely knowledgeable and planned a trip to meet our expectations covering, culture, heritage and nature. Before arrival, he communicated with us providing all the necessary information. He is well organized and punctual.
Ranjith’s vehicle is very clean and comfortable. He is a very safe driver. He has an excellent knowledge of road conditions and routes, knows where to get the best view be it a temple or nature.
He is not just a driver/chauffeur but a national guide too. Therefore he accompanied us to all sites and provided necessary information.
During our 14 day tour, he did not take us to any shops or tried to sell anything to us. We felt that we are is safe hands.

The last full day we did Yala safari at our request which isn’t as good as it’s very busy. He highlighted many other points of interest along the way.
Ran then drove us to our next hotel to end the tour. We would highly recommend Ran he’s a true gentleman, very considerate of his guests and looks after you very well. He is very knowledgeable on his tours and we would definitely use him again next time we are in Sri Lanka. Until the next time Ran fair well dear friend

We are 4 travelers from Germany and found Ran’s contact through this website. Shortly after the booking was confirmed, Ran contacted us via E-Mail an we exchanged numbers for easy communication (WhatsApp).
From the beginning Ran was very kind and helping. I sent him our travel details and Ran arranged a Safari at Udawalawe NP for us, and also provided us a number of Hotel recommendations.
In Sri Lanka Ran got us safely through the chaotic traffic and his van was very comfortable throughout our 8 day trip.
It surprised us that Ran also took an active part in our trip planning, took over the communication with the Hotels, also arranged lunch and dinner and showed us the best spots at each destination. We appreciate his kind assistance alot and it made our vacation much more convenient.
When we tried to get a train ticket near Ella, Ran went above and beyond to get us seats – even though that day everything was completely booked and the trains were full. At the end we got a good spot on one of the trains and all thanks to him.
The Udawalawe safari that Ran organized for us was an amazing experience and we we’re lucky to see much of the wild life. The Jeep was comfortable and we got close to elefants, crocodiles, deers, birds and more.
Ran is very experienced and knowledgable about the country’s history, culture and wild life, so we learned alot in between destinations. During the Safari he helped us spot the animals and explained alot.
He never lead us into tourist traps and instead warned us about scams, so we never felt pressured to do or buy anything.
Ran was also very flexible and took us everywhere we wanted to go.
At the end of our trip he kindly asked us for direct feedback both positive and negative, which we appreciate.
To summarize: we booked a “Driver” but we got much more – Ran was also our guide and travel assistant. His service was exceptional and there’s nothing to complain about.

We traveled around Sri Lanka with Ran in his impeccable 4×4. The vehicle, with a/c, is very spacious and comfortable, he keeps it very clean and drives very prudently. He knows his country very well. Before arriving in Sri Lanka we had already communicated with Ran by email to tell him what our route plan was and the accommodations we had reserved. But he can organize the entire trip very well, hotel reservations included within the budget that is set for him and cheaper than any agency. He told us many interesting stories and anecdotes and managed to take us to “special” places, difficult to find in tourist guides.
There are many things that a tourist can’t get (such as tickets to the scenic train from Kandy to Ella, impossible to obtain without Ran’s invaluable help). He is also a guide who does not take you to stores for you to buy and thus earn a commission. He is a very ethical person in this regard. Ran was the key to an enjoyable trip; he knew so much about where to go, when and how, that he took away all potential stress. His driving was impeccable, we felt very safe on the otherwise sometimes scary Sri Lankan roads. He organised so much for us; safaris, trips to beaches and temples etc. He was unfailingly punctual, cheerful and good-humoured, and it’s safe to say that our trip to the country would have been a very different experience without him. When we came to idea to come to Sri Lanka, I firstly searched for a car to rent. But then shortly realized to book a tour with a guide driver. Ran had the best reviews and that was an excellent choice. He deserved such raiting. Ran quickly answered my questions, was flexible and we aligned on a tour as per my plan. Ran advised on timings and offered to book reasonable accommodation, too. The offered was also the best one! He is a good and safe driver, stops when you want and give you as much time as you need. He Never offered or insisted on any touristic shops or restaurants. He advises on tips and ensured we were not charged more than locals. Ran is very cultural, gives you good orientation and guided us in the visited places. You do not need to worry about booking tickets, hiring additional local guides. The car was very comfortable with well enough place for four of us and our luggage. Ran also well managed for the fuel, so we where not impacted at All by the economic crisis.

It has been a truly wonderful experience. We were a little anxious about the political situation in the country but in practice this didnt significantly affect us.
Ran is extremely experienced and knowledgeable. He has many contacts around the country which helped our trip go smoothly.
He is a careful driver and takes great care to keep his SUV clean. There is also Wi-Fi in his vehicle which we found very useful.
I have been on trips where guides are constantly taking you to shops, predumably because it is in their interests. Ran did not do that once which we greatly appreciated. We knew he would take us somewhere if we asked but had confidence he would make sure we werent taken advantage of.
The hotels Ran took us too were generally good particularly if you are on a budget. I did book some of the hotels before we came to Sri Lanka which was fine by Ran. He was very accomodating throughout. We are completing our trip with a few days in a relatively expensive hotel but despite flashing out at the end our holiday has been very good value. I would strongly recommend Ran to you and this type of trip. Ive done lots of organised tours with large companies in the past and this has compared very well with them all. Do come to Sri Lanka. Its a wonderful country and the people need tourists!

Amazing driver. We travelled with with him for 6 full days and we felt that it wasn’t enough. Great organisational skills, knows a lot about Sri Lanka’s history, religion, great English. Well educated, nice to talk to about every topic. Fast and efective reaction to every issue or problem. Very caring. Have lots of contacts (hotels, restaurants, activities). Does not push you into tourist traps, all his recommendations were amazing. We saw leopards only because of Ran. Our safari driver which we organised ourselves dissapeared thus Ran organised us a new very professional driver within an hour the night before the safari morning. The safari driver took us so early in the morning that we were the second car to the gate and were able to see 3 leopards (only few cars saw them). Ran did our holiday special, we felt safe and taken care of. Thank you so much! Totally recommend!

10) Calling ahead to hotels to notify we were on the way and to ensure everything was ready
Having Ran with you is like having an entire team there helping you navigate a foreign land while maximizing your value and time spent doing activities that match your interests. He is very protective of you and your time.
Ran takes his role as your travel advisor very seriously. His van was always clean (he was constantly sweeping it and picking up after us) and he realizes the importance of wearing a mask and sanitizing his hands frequently (even more often than we did). In a country that doesn’t watch the clock, Ran was always very early to pick us up. On our departure we misread the time and needed to be picked up at 3AM instead of 5AM. Not a problem, we texted Ran that night and he was there early that morning. He verified all timelines and provided alternatives when necessary.
One example of Ran’s usefulness was when we needed a COVID test for our next travel date and found out that only certain areas of the country offered them. Ran called up the tour authority and got in contact with a local hospital, arranged clinical staff to transit to our hotel, and coordinated all of this with hotel management. He followed up with the clinic repeatedly to ensure our samples had arrived and that we would get the results timely. He single-handedly turned a potential headache into a seamless experience and we were able to continue our vacation without worrying.
There were other experiences like this as well. The bottom line is that if you don’t have Ran guiding you, then I guarantee you are going to overpay, put yourself at risk, and not have nearly the experience that you could have had. He is literally worth his weight in Sri Lankan gold!
Having Ran there with us on the trip made me realize that this type of service is invaluable and I have been missing out on many of my other trips. I plan to now start using a local chauffeur (guide) for my upcoming vacations and will definitely use Ran again when I am back in Sri Lanka.

We have finished our vacation trip with Ranjith just a few days ago. Our little company of 4 persons from Ukraine spent 6 days travelling across the island. The first part of our vacation we spent on the Mirissa beach, then we needed someone with a car to show us an island. We reviewed a lot of drivers on various internet resources and stoped our choice on Ran Holidays for 2 main reasons:
1. Really good reviews of other people;
2. When I wrote a letter to Ran he answered me immediately, what I can not say about other drivers.
We made a plan on how to spend these days and sent it to Ran, so he could recommend us a better way to visit all the places we wanted what he actually did. When we met Ran first time met, he made a positive first impression. He arrived on time and was waiting for us more than 1,5 hours. Ran speaks English fluently and tried to repeat us if we couldn’t understand. That was a huge advantage because there are no so many people on Sri-Lanka who speak English well.
I should admit also, Ran drives his car very carefully and safely. That also was a surprise, as we travelled small distances with other drivers and it was like a nightmare.
On our journey, we didn’t solve any issues as Ranjith dealt with all of them. He booked hotels (the best local ones with a scenic view) in each new city for us, he helped us to buy tickets, change money, pick mature fruits, made stops if we needed to go to the supermarket or anything else. If we were exhausted we could sleep in car as much as we wanted.
The thing that make him a profeccional in this sphere – he loves his job, he has fantastic knowledge about Sri-Lanka and has an aswer to any qouestion from history to little birds, from food to traditions.
Definitely I will recommend Ran to my friends as we got much more than expected. And at the end of our trip, it was difficult to say good-bye, as he became our good friend.
Don’t hesitate, choose Ranjith and you will get the maximum of your trip!

Ran is a very well educated and knowledgable man and a very safe driver, which you definitely need on the roads in Sri Lanka. His knowledge of the history, flora and fauna enhanced our trip and it was nice to have the local knowledge of the best times and days to do certain activities.
Our 17 day trip with Ran went very smoothly as he was always on time, friendly, informative and showed great concern for our welfare. When our son was sick in Kandy he said to call him anytime if we wanted to take him to the hospital. It didn’t end up being necessary but it was great to know we had someone to call on if we needed.
Ran totally understands that it is your holiday so will give you the help but also the space you need to enjoy your trip.

When selecting a driver/guide I had two main concerns. First that the driver spoke/understood English that we could understand and second that the vehicle would be comfortable. Ran fulfilled both of these tasks with flying colors.
Ran picked us up in Colombo for a 5 day trip in September 2019, then we proceeded to Galle for a couple of days. Along the way we visited a sea turtle rescue operation and also did a mangrove boat expedition, both were worth the time spent. After Galle we headed north to Udawalawe for a safari which he lined up. Great experience, we saw at least 30 elephants, many right next to the truck as well as peacocks, water buffalo, a wild hog, a civic cat and numerous other birds both large and small. Next we had a very long day going to Ella, NeuwaraElla, and Kandy. Even though this was a very long day we had great conversations about both of our countries, plants, politics, religion, etc. and we felt very safe despite the crazy driving in Sri Lanka. The final day he dropped us at the airport in Colombo on time, safe and sound.
Ran started this trip as a driver and guide and ended it as a friend. I would highly recommend him not only for his ability to communicate, his knowledge and obvious love of his country but also his van is comfortable and has plenty of room.

We had planned some of our route and accommodation and Ran helped us plan the remainder en-route, suggesting some excellent places to stay. We ate at a many non-tourist places and he always provided good advice on what to pay and how to tip.
Ran is knowledgeable and experienced and was able to take us to places of particular interest (in architecture, landscape and food) and Ran organised a brilliant evening visit to the Kataragama Perahera.
We traveled from Negombo mbo to Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Tissa and back up the coast In Ran’s very comfortable and clean Toyota van and always felt very safe and the pace was unhurried.
Some days we spent without travelling and Ran was always extremely punctual picking us up and responding to calls and texts.
We would thoroughly recommend Ran if you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka. He may not be the cheapest driver, but the cheapest is never the best and we got more than our money’s worth with Ran.

We have been traveling continuously for many years, in over 60 countries. We have taken roadtrips in many of them, and so we decided to do in Sri Lanka. We usually travel in a budget, sometimes tight. This time we decided to go with Ranjith, even though he was not the cheapest proposal, due to his communication and feedback. We could not have been happier, and we think it may have saved us money even. Every night he helped us find cheap accommodation that fit our budget and bargain extensively at times. Not only accommodation but anywhere we went: local restaurants, shops, etc. Ranjith was a very good, slow and safe driver, very careful and with his nice car, always clean, good AC. He was always on time in the morning, and very flexible with our schedule. We work online until late night and usually start our days late. He speaks very good english, and had many interesting facts to share about Sri Lanka. During our stay, unfortunately Sri Lanka suffered terrorist bombing attacks. Ranjith was always on top of things, careful and with updated information, very helpful and responsible. We were very calm about everything and it did not affect our trip. We recommend him to anyone wanting to visit.

We have just returned from a wonderful trip in Sri Lanka. We have held Christmas and New Year down there. We had been recommended Ran, so we contacted him by mail and we got a little back and forth about the wishes we could have in Sri Lanka. Ran planned the trip based on our wishes and it succeeds very well. Ran always took care that we were well. Looked after us as we moved into the somewhat chaotic traffic (it doesn’t make it easier to get left). Ran has a great knowledge both within the cultural, political, religion and nature. It is important for him to show off his country’s various facets. Ran helped me arrange a memorable trip and my 2 children (aged 10 and 12 years) got on with him incredibly well, he made them feel safe and he really listened to what they wanted to do. He arranged a fantastic safari and so much more, and made good suggestions during our trip of where to go, stopping off at some truly beautiful places.

We’ve travelled twice with Ran now – we first met him in 2008 when my partner and I booked a holiday through a tour company. He was an excellent guide back then and we recommended him to two friends and stayed in touch. In 2018, we went back to Sri Lanka with my parents in law and 5 year old son. This time Ran arranged a full 9 day tour for us, including B&B in good 3 star hotels, for a very reasonable price. He’s a very friendly, knowledgeable and dependable guide and, on both tours, has really helped us make the most of our time in Sri Lanka. When one of our party suffered a a fracture he was absolutely brilliant at getting us the medical help we needed, and replanned our accommodation and activities accordingly. We would absolutely recommend him and hope to travel with him again.

The excellent and detailed reviews have qualified for us as our “Guide Lecturer” Ran. His offer to us was clear and unambiguous, there was unlike many other offers no additional cost. agree all ratings and we can only connect us to the general praise. He has vast knowledge of his country and culture, ideal complement our program with ideas and suggestions. All tourist traps we have circumnavigated with Rans help, even with all customary cost of food, entrance fees, gratuities, etc. he could communicate us always clear. Especially while he was very caring, concerned and prevented that we ripped off as tourists. As a certified tourist guide he could accompany us in all the sights, extra costs for local guides were therefore for us not an issue. Rans scheduling has ensured that we were at the right times in the right places. Highlights for us were: Safari in the Udawalawa National Park train from Ella to Nuwara Eliya, cave temple at Dambulla and the ancient royal city of Anuradhapura. Today he dropped us off safely and relaxed from our “beach hotel” in Passikudah. Our tip: Ran, contact via e-mail, it is not an agency needed! He responds promptly and reliably.

Alle Touristenfallen haben wir mit Rans Hilfe umschifft, auch alle landesüblichen Kosten für Essen, Eintritte, Trinkgelder usw. konnte er uns immer klar kommunizieren. Besonders dabei war er sehr fürsorglich, besorgt und hat verhindert, dass wir als Touristen abgezockt werden. Als zertifizierter Fremdenführer konnte er uns bei allen Sehenswürdigkeiten begleiten, Extrakosten für lokale Guides waren somit für uns kein Thema. Rans Zeitplanung hat dafür gesorgt, dass wir zu den richtigen Zeiten an den richtigen Orten waren. Highlights waren für uns: Safari in den Udawalawa Nationalpark, Zugfahrt von Ella nach Nuwara Eliya, Höhlentempel in Dambulla und die alte Königstadt Anuradhapura. Heute setzte er uns wohlbehalten und relaxt in unserem „Strandhotel“ in Passikudah ab.

It was a very great experience and I highly recommend Ran any time! He is very kind, helpful, drove safely and made sure we arrived at the correct places. Further, he helped us book several day-trips and organised train tickets. The communication when making the booking with Ran was perfect! If we go again it would definitely be with Ran!

We were advised to hire Ranjith prior to our visit to Sri Lanka and was super happy with our trip. Ranjith is an extremely knowledgeable and excellent guide and run quietly and safely on the roads. He is very flexible and listen to what they are interested in watching and do not drive their customers to any “tourist traps” to shop. We had many interesting conversations and learned a lot about Sri Lanka during our tour of 5 days before we went to the south coast for swimming and sunbathing. We had booked several of our hotels before the trip and got help with booking the remaining hotels. Traffic and vägsitationen makes the journey between sites takes time, please check the itinerary before by Ranjith.

Vi hade många intressanta samtal och fick veta väldigt mycket om Sri Lanka under vår rundtur på 5 dagar innan vi åkte till sydkusten för sol och bad.

Before we arrived to Sri lanka, we had made our own bookings at the different hotels. Unfortunately we got in contact with Ran after the hotels where booked, when we now know that he can arrange fantastic hotels all around Sri Lanka.
We started at the airport and went to Pinnawala, Kandy, Ella and stoped in Unawatuna. During this 6 days, we had a terrific guide and driver in Ran. The car was comfortable and very clean, perfect for us as a small family with a lots of luggage. Ran as guide is very experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Always in time, well prepared and in good mood, was something that we appreciated.
When you travel with children, you also know that somethimes do you need to be flexible (as family and driver). Ran was very good to pay attention to our daughter’s well-being and to experience things she appreciated.
Finally, we can also mention that Ran is a very good driver with a comfortable driving style. We would gladly recommend Ran as a guide and driver! Thanks Ran for some fantastic days together!!!

Die Reise war für uns Freunde voller Spass und neuer Eindrücke. Wichtig ist das Ran ein vorsichtiger und auch umsichtiger Autofahrer ist. In Sri Lanka sind das leider nicht alle Verkehrsteilnehmer. Ich kann Ran mit gutem Gewissen empfehlen. Man sollte Interesse für die Kultur und das Essen von Sri Lanka mitbringen. Ran ist pünktlich und vollkommen zuverlässig.

Ran is a very experienced guide. He is a guide for over 20years. You can ask anything it almost. His knowledge of history and Buddhism are profound. The trip was for us friends full of fun and new experiences. Ran is important a careful and prudent motorist. In Sri Lanka, unfortunately, not all road users. I can recommend in good conscience Ran. You should bring interest in the culture and the food of Sri Lanka. Ran is on time and completely reliable.

Ran is a perfect choice for budget Sri Lankan experience. We were very happy with his selection of small hotels, which allowed us to experience local culture whilst feeling very comfortable. Also it was a hassle free holiday as Ran took care of everything and always had an advice for the next day tour, which was great. He has a very good knowledge of the island and it’s wildlife of course and can answer any question you may have (huge bonus). Most importantly he is a very honest person you can trust.

My partner and I spent a great week with Ran at the beginning of December 2017. We have set some fixed points, Ran has planned the route and proposed us hotels. The whole thing was already months before our trip, the answers were always very fast. Later we also saw why. Ran is an incredibly hard-working guy and while we recovered from sightseeing in the evenings, he opened the notebook and answered his mails – every day! One week is of course too short to see everything, so we went longer distances – Ran is a very comfortable and safe driver, which one can not expect from God from all locals. The proposed hotels were all very clean and tidy. In between, Ran has always shown us something worth seeing along the way and told us a lot about Buddhism and Sri Lanka. There were no unwanted stops at souvenir shops, etc. On our questions about prices, etc. Ran has always given us a competent and honest answer and thus several times protected us from increased prices.
Shortly before our planned arrival we had to reschedule something, also there Ran was very flexible, canceled a room without cancellation costs and picked us up instead of the hotel reliably at the airport.
Overall, a clear recommendation for a trip with Ran!
Regardless of this, generally speaking to Sri Lanka:
It is a bit strange when you pay as tourist x times more for admissions than the locals. Maybe you can somehow understand that money is needed to preserve the cultural sites, etc. But that you have to pay 3 times the price for food (eg Rice And Curry), that goes too far. So better ask first.

Eine Woche ist natürlich zu kurz um alles zu sehen, daher sind wir auch längere Strecken gefahren – Ran ist ein sehr gemütlicher und sicherer Fahrer, was man bei Gott nicht von allen einheimischen erwarten kann. Die vorgeschlagenen Hotels waren alle sehr sauber und ordentlich. Zwischendurch hat Ran uns immer etwas sehenswertes an der Strecke gezeigt und uns viel zum Buddhismus und Sri Lanka erzählt. Es gab keine ungewollten Stopps an Souvenirläden etc. Auf unsere Fragen zu Preisen etc. hat Ran uns immer eine kompetente und ehrliche Antwort gegeben und uns so mehrmals vor erhöhten Preisen geschützt.
Kurz vor unserer geplanten Anreise mussten wir etwas umplanen, auch da war Ran sehr flexibel, hat ohne stornokosten ein Zimmer gecancelt und uns statt vom Hotel verlässlich am Flughafen abgeholt.

We are a Spanish couple who visited Sri Lanka in November 2017. We had a fantastic experience with Ran during our visit.
First of all, Ran is a reputed and certified/official tourist guide with 25 years of experience in the job. After working for different tourist companies, now he is working on his own for the last years. Once you contact him, he will ask what places of Sri Lanka are you interested in visiting and he will customize the tour according to your needs and available days.
Ran is always on time and he will take care of you during the whole tour and drive you around the country, which by the way, is not an easy task. Traffic in Sri Lanka is quite chaotic but he is an experienced driver and you’ll always feel safe during the trips. He owns a nice, clean and comfortable Toyota van, equipped with a good A/C and enough space for up to 5 people. He is always taking care of his van and will keep it clean during the tour.
He booked the hotels for us in advance at the places we wanted to visit and even bought train tickets before we arrived to Sri Lanka, but he didn’t charge anything in advance. For me, the most important thing is that he is a serious, responsible and honest person.
At the tourist places, he will guide you throughout the place and give his explanations but he will never take you to tourists souvenirs shops unless you request so.
Ran is also a funny person with a great sense of humor. He went through a lot of experiences with people from different nationalities during his years as a tourist guide and is always happy to keep a good and interesting conversation during the trips. He has a really good knowledge of the english language.
During our trip we found other tourists who hired a driver and then another person as a guide and were struggling to get hotels on their own at the touristic places in an attempt to save some money. Other people were hiring tuctuc drivers day by day and getting cheated by them, or traveling around in crappy buses with no A/C, etc. My advice is: Why would you do that when you can have a driver who is a guide at the same time and who is somebody you can trust and will take care of everything for you? At the end of the day, in my opinion, you will save money and headaches hiring somebody like Ran and trust in his experience.

A todos los que estáis pensando en ir Sri Lanka os animo a visitar esta hermosa isla. Coincido con el resto en que la experiencia ha sido muy gratificante.
Contratamos un guía/conductor que ha sido uno de los mejores aciertos de este viaje. Gracias a Ran (ranjithalwis@ymail.com) hemos sacado el máximo partido a los 6 días que estuvimos con él: es muy amable, competente, con presupuestos flexibles y ajustados a tu bolsillo… una joya, vamos! Además nos ayudo a organizar hoteles, taxis y visitas para el resto de días que no pudimos contar con sus servicios. Tiene mucha experiencia con turistas españoles, así que… animaos y no dudéis en contactar con él para cualquier consulta. Es una apuesta segura para pasar unas vacaciones estupendas en esta isla encantadora.

We hired a guide / driver who has been one of the greatest successes of this trip. Thanks to Ran (ranjithalwis@ymail.com) we have taken full advantage of the 6 days we were with him: he is very friendly, competent, flexible budgets and tailored to your pocket … a gem, come on! I also helped us arrange hotels, taxis and tours for the rest of the days we were unable to have their services. It has a lot of experience with Spanish tourists, so … cheer up and do not hesitate to contact him for any inquiries. It is a safe bet for a great holiday on this enchanting island.

Eccellente autista, guida e punto di riferimento. Grazie a Ran, e al suo van, ultra-comodo e fresco, abbiamo potuto muoverci all’interno del paese in sicurezza e velocità avendo sempre un appoggio e aiuto concreto per ogni tipo di situazione. Il tutto in buoni budget-hotels, e con un ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo. Ci ha anche fornito ogni tipo di supporto e consiglio sui nostri spostamenti successivi e si è dimostrato una persona affidabile e di compagnia. Parla in inglese ed è molto flessibile e comunicativo.

Volvimos de Sri Lanka hace dos semanas y nos quedamos encantados con la ruta y los servicios de nuestro guía y conductor Ranjith Alwis. Sólo tenemos buenas palabras para él. Realizamos un itinerario de 1 semana por el país, en su cómoda van con aire acondicionado, visitando los siguientes lugares: Aeropuerto de Colombo – Polonnaruwa – Sigiriya – Dambulla – Kandy – Nuwara Eliya – Ella – Yala – Mirissa – Galle – Negombo – Aeropuerto de Colombo.
Ran, como le llamamos, nos ayudó a organizar la ruta y los hoteles mediante toda la correspondencia que mantuvimos con él en las semanas previas al viaje. Contestó rápidamente todos nuestros pesados mails, con mil dudas, preguntas y preocupaciones! También se encargó de reservar todos los hoteles, pequeños y con mucho encanto, en los que nos alojamos a lo largo del itinerario por Sri Lanka.
El grupo lo componíamos 2 parejas jóvenes y a pesar de la diferencia de edad con Ran, la conexión y el buen rollo que tuvimos con él fue espectacular. Nos reímos mucho durante todo el recorrido con él y con la música de Ran FM, que hicieron amenos y llevaderos los kilómetros por carretera.
Ranjith Alwis es un excelente conductor y guía oficial de Sri Lanka que conoce y ama profundamente su país, su historia y su cultura. Con él pudimos descubrir el país de una forma muy cómoda, durmiendo y comiendo en hoteles y restaurantes familiares que nos acercaron más a las costumbres y a la gente maravillosa de Sri Lanka.
Ran se adaptó en todo momento a lo que le pedimos, modificando a veces el itinerario pactado, e intentando satisfacernos al máximo para que nuestra experiencia en este país tan maravilloso fuera inmejorable. Y lo cierto es que nunca lo olvidaremos! Ran, te mandamos un abrazo desde aquí!
En definitiva, si vais a viajar a Sri Lanka, os recomiendo 100% al guía oficial y conductor Ranjith Alwis. Os dejo sus datos de contacto:
